Ireland - Clare Education Centre & Ennis Community College
Clare Education Centre is responsible for in-service training for all 140 schools in County Clare at both Primary and Post Primary Level. The in-service is delivered in a variety of ways – these include day release for teachers, evening classes and on-line resources. The Centre has been involved in many EU-projects and currently hosts 2 projects on its website – www.clareed.ie
In addition to its in-service remit the Centre is the National Administrative Centre for the School Leadership Programme, The Maths Recovery Programme and the Leaving Cert Applied Programme. These programmes are run nationally at suitable venues by the staff of the Centre. The Maths Recovery and the Leaving Cert Applied programme are particularly relevant to pupils who are in danger of leaving school early . In different ways both programmes attempt to make the curriculum more suitable to this type of pupil. Maths Recovery attempts to bring up standards in pupils who are in danger of falling behind or those who are failing and the Leaving Cert Applied programme has re-written many subject areas within the Leaving Cert Exam to make them more practical and connected to the workplace. The involvement of Clare Education Centre with these National Programmes gives us a very thorough insight into the issues around pupils who dropout. Ennis Community College is a large urban based secondary school located in Ennis, County Clare providing comprehensive education in academic and vocational subjects for both boys and girls. The college currently caters for students from 28 different nationalities and ethnic groups. The College is classed as a Band 1 DEIS (Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools) school and is therefore seen as catering for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Students are prepared for the Department of Education and Skills Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate programmes, the two Irish state exams. The College also has a Unit for the Deaf and a unit delivering education through the medium of Irish. It offers courses in Further Education and a variety of evening classes during the academic year. At present the student enrolment is 523 and ranges in age from 12 to 20. The students come from Ennis town, and a catchment area of 15 kilometres radius, which includes villages and rural parishes. The staff, which number about 50 permanent teachers, are assisted by specialist part-time staff. Ennis Community College offers a broad-based and varied curriculum which affords students the opportunity to develop their unique talents and skills across a range of programmes. This is complemented by the wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer and the highly developed Resource Department and Student Support Service which cater for students who have special educational needs. Viskastrandsgymnasiet also offers special vocational training for learning-disabled students. All the programmes aim to provide good vocational training and preparation for further studies. Our teaching methods encourage collaboration among students and shared responsibility between students and staff. Viskastrandsgymnasiet is in central Borås and consists of several buildings which are connected by covered passages with a total floor area of about 17,000 square metres.
